Need a change of pace from your intense training or race schedule this summer? Take part THIS SATURDAY in the Glenwood Springs CRUISE-A-THON(g)-the race for the Average Jo(e)!
The CRUISE-A-THON(g) is a triathlon designed for the not-so-hardcore athlete in all of us. Similar to a triathlon, the race will consist of three legs.
1. A cruiser bike ride along the Roaring Fork River, beginning and ending at Veltus Park
2. A “thong” (also known as flip-flop) walk down the bike path along the Roaring Fork River
3. A tube (or other floatation device) down the Roaring Fork River, back to Veltus Park
To help propel you along the course, there will be various “comfort stations” (think aid stations) along the way. These fueling stations will dole out various high caloric treats (such as soda, doughnuts or chocolate) to sustain proper energy levels.
Following the race is an after party at Veltus Park consisting of live music, libations, award ceremony to the Jo(e) with the average time for the race. This race rewards being average, so leave your sports drinks and power gels at home! This race does not take brute strength, endurance or fortitude, but it does take a sense of humor, adventurous spirits and under-inflated egos.
Look for the River Stewards dishing out BACON at their comfort station at the walk/float transition station, along the Roaring Fork River. We will also be stationed at Veltus Park after the event handing out information on the Roaring Fork Conservancy.
While this is intended to be a fun and entertaining event, the CRUISE-A-THON(g) organizers are river enthusiasts concerned with healthy rivers and streams in the Roaring Fork Valley. Any and all proceeds from the event will go toward improving the river experience in and around Glenwood Springs through education, recreation, environmental awareness, and infrastructure improvements.
Check out www.cruiseathong.com for more information on the race. As always, check out www.roaringfork.org/stewards for information on future Roaring Fork Conservancy and River Stewards events.
See you Saturday!
