THE ASPEN BUSINESS LUNCHEON
Presents our Featured Program WEDNESDAY
Flowing Uphill:  Diversions, Rivers and the Future of Water
in Aspen and Colorado
Presented by:
KEN NEUBECKER
Executive Director, The Western Rivers Institute
Colorado is arid country, where water is more valuable than gold.  The mountains, with their melting snow and rivers are the water supply for over 33 million people.  This talk looks at the history of water development in Colorado, the many trans-mountain diversions and the impacts they have had on the Colorado River headwaters, including the Roaring Fork watershed.  In places anywhere from 40% to 65% of native flows are diverted east from our rivers.  On top of this we face an uncertain future with increasing demands and a shrinking supply.  Colorado's future will depend on new ideas about water, rivers and balancing competing needs.
